冬至


冬至means winter is coming, it is one of the solar terms which originated from Chinese agricultural society. “冬”means winter, “至”means solstice. The actual day of 冬至will be depended on Chinese lunar calendar. Traditionally, Chinese eat 湯圓dumplings at the day of winter solstice meaning they are getting one year older, besides, it also means families will come back to their hometown and have a reunion, namely families reunite together. 圓symbolize reunited團圓。
湯圓is made of glutinous rice, the shape is round and small, mixed in the soup, sometimes be stuffed with something inside, sometimes not, depends on people’s favors, so there are various flavors, like sweet and salty.
